Ramblings of a broke, pop culture junkie
Didn't know how good we had it ...
Watching WFLD 32 in Chicago with Doctor Donald D Rose djing between blocks of Popeye and The Little Rascals.
Didn't know how good we had it ...
Bozo and Cookie (or was it really "Cooky"), Frazier Thomas, Garfield Goose, Ray Rayner and Klutch Kargo all on WGN -- Chicago's very own Channel 9
Didn't know how good we had it ....
Speed Racer on Channel 44, Soul Train originating on WCIU 26, Gigglesnort Hotel and Jubilee Showcase on Channel 7
Didn't know how good we had it.

Sunday morning in the 70s and 80s ... Pancakes cooking (hopefully) with Alga syrup and Bob Evans sausages. SID ODOWER comes on -- the only Caucasion guy in the room -- introducing JAMES CLEVELAND, ALBERTINA WALKER or THE NORFLEET BROTHERS, all delivering their special brand of Gospel music that makes it feel like Sunday for sure.
It is Sunday morning in Chicago. Gigglesnort Hotel is gone off and after this show is over, we'll be on our way to church. If I don't make it to church, then I'll watch Tarzan, Lone Ranger and Cisco Kid on WGN. Then I'll turn to WFLD 32 and see if they'll show Ma & Pa Kettle, The East Side Kids, a Jerry Lewis or a Tony Curtis movie ... Sunday in Chicago ... Nothing like it.

I always get teased because I don't listen to the radio much. But then radio isn't always appealing to me.
I'm someone who has been alive long enough to remember interesting radio personalities like Bob Wall, Bobby O'Jay, Irene Mojica, Herb Kent, Dick Biondi .... And it isn't so much about the personalities in this instance. It's more about the music.
I like variety. I could dig tuning into a station where they jump from Doo Wop to Classic Rock, to India Arie and Alicia Keys, Fred Hammond and Tonex -- all within the same show. That's what I'm on. That's how I roll.
I'm looking for the chance to DJ for more diverse crowds. I'm tired of playing the Casper Slide, the Cupid Shuffle and Soldier Boy ... And that last request was from a 50 year old (wannabe 25 year old) at a Autistic school's Black History dance ... I played the slides, but I refused to play that last one.
In case you didn't know, my specialty is Urban Contemporary and the various other forms of Christian music. However, for a non Christian themed party, I'm trying to set a mood of fun by just playing good music, not neccessarily HIT music. But folks won't let me do my thing without asking for ignorant themed songs ... Still holding out for my own club or a once a month opportunity where I can just do my thing.

Where is this generation's Bozo the Clown and Ray Rayner? Everyyear I watch my tape of the WGN special that celebrates the legacy of Bozo , Ray and Frasier Thomas. If you don't have a clue, go to tvparty.com's WGN page or look them up on wikipedia.org.
Bozo buckets, slapstick, ducks, live circus acts, Garfield Goose .... There was nothing like it. But then a lot of care and dedication was given to children's shows back then ... Wow ... I'm feeling nostalgic. Can you tell?
